How to Make a Living as an Artist

I have been asked a number of times about how to make a living as an artist. I never looked at it as a way of making a living but as a way to live my life. The "making a living" is a by-product of doing what I love to do – which is to paint. An artist (and I include decorators in this) does something for a sense of being. By creating an environment that records their existence (the painting, the decorated room, etc) you feel a higher sense of purpose. How you do that may be enjoyed by others – but, as I said before, it is a by-product of the process – And when it is done in an interesting way others pay for that view.

The painting is of the grain elevators in the town of Bigelow, Minnesota population 231. Recently I visited Bigelow where my sweetheart’s brother-in-law has a farm. I've been there a number of times and fascinated with the prairie elevators. Painting is charcoal, ink, black acrylic on canvas. 24" x 36"
