"Black and White flagOne of the problems with art is people always want to read meaning into the painting. When I sold this flag the client asked if there was any significance to me painting a black and white flag. He knew I paint a lot of social/political art. Although he loved the painting he was also concerned with the perception he may give by hanging the flag in his home.
Years ago William Faulkner received the Nobel Prize for Literature. In an interview after his acceptance speech a reporter asked him, "What is the significance of the horse in your novel, "The Sound and the Fury?" Faulkner replied. "Sometimes you just need a horse."
So the answer to my client's question is, "Sometimes, some things may look interesting in black and white. But after I had painted the flag I did want to make a strong political statement and did another flag seen below. And, because of its political nature it has not sold.
